An atmospheric gas becomes a greenhouse gas (GHG) by absorbing and reflecting infrared radiation that would otherwise escape into space. GHGs contribute to the warming of the Earth’s troposphere and surface. It must be appreciated that warming of these two (among other things) sets into motion a number of changes which leads to climate change. All Volatile Anaesthetic (VAs) are potent GHGs. Download the PPT Part-1 Download the PPT Part-2Consequent to the changing times i.e. the climate change events affecting every part of the globe—India, USA, South America, Europe, Antarctica—ISA Noida GBN unveiled the campaign Climate change: We, the Anaesthesiologists, can make a difference on World Environment Day 5th June 2024. The launch was an online event hosted by ISA UP state in collaboration with ISA Noida GBN.
The welcome address was given by Dr Peeyush Chaudhary, President ISA Noida GBN while the event was moderated by Dr Kapil Singhal, President Elect ISA UP. Senior office bearers of ISA UP state Dr Apurva Aggarwal, ISA UP state President and Dr Sandeep Sahu, ISA UP state Secretary along with Dr RK Bhaskar, GC member ISA National graced the occasion with their presence; Ms Sanchita Jindal, former advisor (scientist G) Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change kindly agreed to be the chief guest at this event and shared some valuable notes on biomedical waste management.
Dr Priyankar Sarkar, Consultant anaesthesia at BLK-Max hospital New Delhi and lead collaborator for the campaign, was the speaker at the event. The webinar sought to illustrate how an anaesthesiologist could look to adapt their practice so as to decrease carbon dioxide emissions linked to Anaesthesia.
Dr Mukul Kumar Jain, Secretary ISA Noida GBN gave the vote of thanks. The event was attended by around 50 audience members from across the country and was quite well received
The following write up expands on this perspective, explores the effects of VAs on the planet’s climate, proposes Total Intravenous Anaesthesia as one of the viable alternatives and argues in favour of why we need to make the change.

Download the Complete Doc“Anaesthesia practice makes a measurable contribution to global warming”. Together with the fact that the negative impacts of climate change will be borne by everyone, the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologist consisting of 136 nations, brought out a global consensus statement focussed on reducing the impact of Anaesthesia on the environment. It called for using inhalational agents with the lowest GWP and rationing the use of desflurane and nitrous oxide for specific clinical indications only.
Apart from the focus on VAs, the statement encourages Anaesthesiologist s to adopt environmentally sustainable principles with regard to anaesthesia administration (green anaesthesia), anaesthesia education and align their practise to the triple bottom line of environmental (planet), social (people) and financial (profit) accountability
Though relatable and despite climate change events being experienced on the individual level as well as hogging limelight in media (unseasonal rains, unseasonal floods, cloudbursts), global warming and climate change has not occupied the desperate importance it deserves. Since this topic is naya for the aam Anaesthesiologist , I have put together a document which will help her/him to navigate this topic. There are many facets which can initially overwhelm someone getting to know the topic; so this document highlights the main points in some of the references used.

References Article Pathway DocumentI am indebted to Dr Kapil Singhal, founder president, and ISA Noida GBN for giving me a platform for the campaign-- Climate change: We, the Anaesthesiologists, can make a difference. ISA Noida GBN is excited to launch this education cum awareness campaign (non profit) directed mostly at our colleagues as to how they can modify the impact of Anaesthesia on climate change.
I believe this campaign is topical and essential. Emissions from healthcare count are between 4-10% of a nation’s total GHG emission while that from perioperative practice is 5% of the above number. If global healthcare were a country, it would be the fifth largest carbon emitter on the planet. So the contribution of anaesthesia to global warming though small, is measurable & ever increasing. And because it is measurable, to the tune of thousands of kilotons of carbon dioxide, we can make a difference.
Besides awareness the campaign will focus on guiding anaesthesiologists to inculcate principles of environmental sustainability- - meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs—into their perioperative practice while adhering to the triple bottom line of environmental, social and financial responsibility. We would also look to educate and encourage the younger generations of anaesthesiologists to adopt “greener” modes of anaesthesia and do more research in this area. A healthy planet is in our own interests.

Dr Priyankar Sarkar did his schooling from Dhanbad (De Nobili School), his undergrad from Kolkata (NRS Medical College and Hospital) and his postgrad from New Delhi (VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital). He has been interested in events of global warming and their linkage to climate change. He believes it is possible to cope with climate change provided everyone of us makes the effort to educate themselves on this topic, realises the gravity of challenges which lie ahead and makes an effort to limit his/her carbon footprint in personal and professional sphere.
No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else

Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists Noida Gautam Budh Nagar, though recently formed, has many achievements to its name including organising a blockbuster state conference UPISACON 2022 besides winning a host of prizes at the national conferences (click here). Being a young and dynamic organisation, it believes climate change is a crucial topic in today’s times with its effects becoming more adverse in the future; hence the need to care about climate change now more than ever. Launching this campaign is a rational extension of that belief.
